In certain musical genres, such as popular and folk music, the term "songwriter" means someone who authors both music and lyrics, but such a person may also be properly called a "composer." If a songwriter also performs, he or she is called a "singer/songwriter."

My son looked into this for a career project, the starting salaries were around $35,000 per year and the average was closer to $60,000- it did say that the top end was $200,000 but I sure there are far more people at the $35,000 :) This was for the composing and the programming part too if my memory serves me well- good luck!
